FAQ
So, what is this deal anyway?
Console WARS is a short-term murder mystery game for video game characters. If you're familiar with Dangan Roleplay, Trustfell, or Airlocked, you know what you're getting into here. If not, here's a general murdergame FAQ. Your characters are now all participants in an action-social reality TV show, Console WARS, and to escape have to outfight and outsmart every other contestant.
My character wouldn't sign up for this!
We've got you covered. Tomoro Technologies, Console WARS' biggest corporate sponsor, has recently developed inter-dimensional teleportation and has been pulling unlucky individuals out of their home worlds to create a special edition of the popular reality show WARS.
Your character just got super unlucky. They'll wake up with no memory of how they arrived in the setting and will also be missing all of their memories before a certain point in their past. We'll be asking you to apply with two canon points in mind, their perceived canon point and their true canon point, and to identify some important memories. These will come into play (heh) later on.
They will also have an HUD - the "Console" itself, think something like Google Glass except far more cyberpunk (like this but transparent) fixed to their temples. Taking it off isn't an option - the wires underneath simply won't cut and no matter how far they are extended they eventually retract back into the character's head. Their vision is partly obscured by changing information that they can learn to navigate with their eye movement (more here), and as well as biometric readings, a mini-map, and a count of living people, it will also include the IC rules for both weekly challenges and the main game of WARS.
What's the deal with these games and challenges?
Each week, there will be physical or mental activities where characters win anything from fabulous prizes to immunity to that week's motive. In the first round, these will be mini-games in the style of Mario Party. These may be team or individual competitions, and sometimes everyone's a winner in their own way.
Also, the murders that start a round of WARS are a battle for survival. All surviving players have the opportunity to investigate and solve (or obfuscate) the murder so as to avoid losing the game themselves and potentially being the unlucky victim of an execution.
My character wouldn't kill anyone.
Again, we've got you covered. First, a murderer needs a victim. Second, every week the show's announcers will give their contestants a new motivation to kill. Fabulous wealth? Phenomenal cosmic powers? The lives of their entire family? Everyone has a weakness.
Two weeks before a murder, we'll contact two or more players chosen at random to work together along with the mods and write a murder scenario. This would include coming up with a motive for the murder and creating a scene to investigate, as well as any potential mid-challenge interferences.
What if they can't solve the murder?
Funny you should ask, because that's an option! Unlike in many murdergames, failure to solve a murder will not end in a party wipe. Instead, it results in a two-for-one execution. Not only the accused killer, but the least popular character by audience vote (an advance volunteer), will lose out and pay the price: summary execution. If you really hate this guy so much you refuse to participate, well. It might be you next week.
So I'm dead now? What happened?
Just like in most modern video games, death is not the end. There will be opportunities for dead characters to continue interacting, as well as contribute to endgame, in a locked community. We've got some fun in store!
Also, don’t worry if your character canonically doesn’t leave a body behind when they die, like characters from Undertale or members of Organization XIII or what have you. They will here. Why? Well, I guess that’s a mystery for you to find out.
Who can I app, now that I've got the whole package?
The game has to live up to its name, so console video game characters only! Each round of Console WARS will be for characters from a specific set of consoles - Nintendo, Sony, Microsoft, or Sega - and each character can be played in one round unless they survive until the Round 5 finale. Characters from franchises spread out over multiple platforms need to app specifically from games on that round's platform. For example, Kingdom Hearts characters in the Nintendo round would need to be from a Chain of Memories, Days, or Dream Drop Distance canonpoint. We are also taking up to four characters from a franchise in the same round, though no more than two from the same game. The Chocobros can't all be in one round, but Noctis and Gladio could be with Cloud and Lightning in the Sony round, or it could have Noctis, Cloud, Lightning, and Yuna.
Customizable protagonists such as Persona or Bioware adventure game main characters will be determined on a case-by-case basis, though having a strong base personality will work in their favor. For games with adaptations or supplementary materials, the majority of the character's personality needs to come from the original game and their history needs to be game-specific. For instance, Lillie or Hau from Pokemon Sun and Moon would be eligible, but Red or Ash need Pokemon adaptations to be playable so would not.
Speaking of adaptations, we do allow characters that originated in non-video game media, but only if the video game you’re apping from has a game-original storyline. For example, if you wanted to play Edward Elric, you’d have to play him specifically from one of the PS2 games that had its own storyline rather than from the anime itself. On the flip side, you couldn’t app Luke Skywalker just because he was in SNES platformers based on Star Wars.
Finally, Console WARS is a game where people will see others die on a regular basis. Characters need to typically be fifteen years old at canonpoint, but we will consider characters twelve and older if that child character has been shown to handle things with the maturity of an older teen character. Ambiguously aged characters will need to have an understanding of concepts such as death and responsibility for such.
When is "my round" happening?
Here's the round order:
1: Nintendo
2: Sony
3: Microsoft
4: Sega (Either Sega consoles or properties owned by Sega, including Atlus)
5: Round Five will be a little different, and we'll give you more information on it as it draws near! All we can tell you right now is that it might be a little bit of a genre shift, and your actions in the first four rounds will influence how things go in R5.
When does all of this action get started?
This will be tested out during the Mock Trial week.
Tuesday: MOTIVES! Contestants learn how the producers plan to encourage them to kill each other this week.
Thursday: CHALLENGES! Compete for prizes, individually and in teams!
Saturday: MURDERS! Investigations will be set on Saturdays rather than the typical Friday.
Sunday: LET'S PLAY! This is the "trial" section of Console WARS, where contestants work together to avoid having to beat the odds of a sudden death.
The Mock Trial is a beta test for Console WARS, both in-game and in real life. As such, the Mock Trial will be the first iteration of the game, a week-long simulation of a typical Console WARS week. Mock Trial characters can be from all console games and can later be applied fresh to the appropriate round.
We're going to be testing out some new mechanics for use in future rounds, so any players who want to take a special role in helping the mod team test them out can please send us a message after we confirm your reserve!
What are these special mechanics you want to test out?
Well, there are three big ones here! You’ve already noticed the schedule change from Friday and Saturday to Saturday and Sunday, which we’re interested in seeing everyone’s response to. It will likely work better for us as mods, and we’re hoping it works out for you guys, too!
The second mechanic we’re interested in trying out is challenges. These aren’t new to the murdergame scene, per se, because Airlocked and DRRP: Nick versus CN did similar things, but they’re basically little minigames the characters will have to play in order to get perks that might aid them or protection from consequences! They’ll generally be based on minigames like the ones you see in party games like Mario Party and things like that. These will happen every Thursday, barring the round going off the rails in some manner. It’s definitely going to happen in the mock trial, though.
The third mechanic we’re interested in attempting is boss battles! What are boss battles, you ask? Well, while we’ll still be doing standard executions in some rounds, in other rounds, the party/parties voted guilty will be given a final chance at escape! They’ll be given some kind of horrendous boss monster mutation serum, and their boss monster form will be pitted against four of the surviving characters! The four characters facing against the boss monster will be voted for by the other surviving characters, and when they enter the boss arena, they will temporarily be granted their powers back or, in the event that they’re a normie like Phoenix Wright or someone along those lines, given some sort of power-up that will let them face off against the boss.
...so basically, it’s just a fancier execution where a character may have to personally murder their friend. Fun!
There's a lot of stuff to do, is there an AC?
You bet your boots. Required weekly activity is 30 comments in no more than four submitted threads (with at least two other characters!). There are further incentives for activity in the form of "loot box" regains for each fifteen comments submitted.
Loot boxes?
This is a modern game, yo, gotta have loot boxes! These have good drops, though, and aren't necessary for progress. Every Monday, characters will receive hammerspace boxes with randomly determined items, whether their possessions, fellow contestants' possessions, or gifts provided by Tomoro's. They'll get one for weekly activity and one more for every ten comments past that.
